ANONYMITY IN THE WEB

This dissertation examines one of the most attractive characteristics of Internet: the anonymity. It analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of this feature of the net. Wefind that it can be great sometimes, like in press filtrations that skip the statutory proceedings, with opinions of people that don’t think like the most part of the population or with employers thatare afraid of being fired if they express opinions that are opposite to the ones of their bosses. But it can be harmful when it is used to discredit somebody, to insult, to steal or to make the troll.This essay analyzes some of these cases and contemplate how disadvantages have become bigger that advantages and its consequences on the laws and on the minds of the people.

The time periodstudied in this dissertation includes the last few years, due to the fact that it is the time in which Internet offences related to the abuse of the anonymity have increased to worrying levels. To do this,I use three major research strategies: 1) I analyze some articles and opinions in blogs and other websites, 2) I use some real case in newspapers in order to illustrate the principal points and 3) Ihave consulted some concepts in digital encyclopedias.

The information that I use in this essay comes from a big amount of blogs of people specialized in the web, the digital edition of somenewspapers such as “El País” or “El Mundo” and digital encyclopedias such as Wikipedia or the Encyclopaedia Britannica.

I have found that during last years, disadvantages of using anonymity in Internetare making people mistrust it and are producing a strict control composed by a big amount of laws called the “Law 2.0”. Many countries, such as United States or United Kingdom, are establishing veryhard laws against it and are developing methods to finish with it, for instance the digital DNI. Users of Internet are also becoming aware of the risks of it and are becoming distrustful with the users...
