Ecology is the scientific study of interactions of organisms with one another and with the physical and chemical environment. Although it includes the study of environmental problems such as pollution, the science of ecology mainly involves research on the natural world from many viewpoints, using many techniques. Modern ecology relies heavily on experiments, both in laboratory and in fieldsettings. These techniques have proved useful in testing ecological theories, and in arriving at practical decisions concerning the management of natural resources.

Topics of interest to ecologists include the diversity, distribution, amount (biomass), number (population) of organisms, as well as competition between them within and among ecosystems. Ecosystems are composed of dynamically interacting parts including organisms, the communities they make up, and the non-living components of theirenvironment. Ecosystem processes, such as primary production, pedogenesis, nutrient cycling, and various niche construction activities, regulate the flux of energy and matter through an environment. These processes are sustained by organisms with specific life history traits, and the variety of organisms is called biodiversity. Biodiversity, which refers to the varieties of species, genes, and ecosystems,enhances certain ecosystem services.

Types of Wood most common in México
Ceiba
Se han dado usos locales de carpintería. Su madera es muy usada en cajonería 3 . Las canoas“guajiberas” se fabricaban del tronco de este árbol, ahuecándolo mediante fuego y herramientas metálicas.
Liquidámbar
El liquidámbar americano es un árbol ornamental popular por sus intensos colores otoñales; pero tiene algunos problemas: la madera es débil y se desrama fácilmente con las tormentas. Es desagradable caminar sobre sus frutos puntiagudos, y su profusion hace difícil su quite.
La madera esmuy compacta y de grano fino, el duramen es rojizo, y tiene vetas negruzcas; se usa para pulpa de fibra, es pobre para carpintería o leña. Como suele secar en color negro, se lo utiliza en vez de la ebonita para marcos de cuadros, y otros usos similares, pero no tolera el exterior.
Palo mulato
Su madera es su principal producto, se utiliza para la construcción de canoas y viviendas rurales,fabricación de mangos para herramientas e implementos agrícolas, cajas y embalajes, cabos para cerillos, abatelenguas, palillos para dientes, chapa, huacales para hortalizas y frutas, carpintería en general y pulpa para papel. Como medicinal la infusión que se obtiene en algunos lugares se utiliza para bajar de peso. La resina que mana del tronco y de las ramas se utiliza en algunas regiones comosustituto del pegamento o como cemento para pegar piezas rotas de vidrio, loza y porcelana, también es utilizado como purgante, sudorífico y diurético. En los sistemas agroforestales es empleado como cercos vivos, ya que tienen una buena reproducción asexual (esquejes).
