Discipline is an ethical system and profit-making strategy; discipline is a technique of the self.
-Is a method for engaging the market and being accountable to it.
-Is anideal and a technique that traders work to enact, using this method of discipline they can manage their tasks with the market.
Zaloom’s ethnographic research was developed on the trading floor of theChicago Board of Trade (CBOT), and in a London proprietary dealing room.
This work explores the tightness between ideals of rationalized economic behavior and practices of financial traders,financial action, material technologies, and the process of self-formation in global futures.
This work analyzes financial practices and how these trading techniques are adopted, adapted, and transformedin the new location and technology.
Somewhat unintentionally casts doubt on any notion of the global economy being controlled.
The author observes how speculators are trained, and trainthemselves, to block out all they discipline themselves to shed ego, affect, and individuality, so as to be no more incarnate instruments, responsive to the dispositions and tics of the market: which is,after all, the boss/the authority.
Traders are constantly disciplined and reminded not to delude themselves that through their own powers of reason they can outwit the market.
This researchshows that the market posses the ultimate truth is the moral authority, and that the market is an event, a situation.
This ethnography shows that the role of the trader is to design trading patternsto instruct computers on how to do the actual trading and how human control of trading is avoid by the market.
Somehow Zaloom proposes a need to left aside post-Marxism and approachpost-structuralism which is preoccupied for the indecisive, uncertain and inconclusiveness of events.
