Synopsis
This module aims to give students a critical and theoretical awareness of past, present and future changes and conflicts within the field of design.

Design has often been used as a medium to persuade and influence; in manyways a political tool. Now in the twenty-first century designers more often have to question their practices and their relationship to the communication process as a persuasive ‘political’ tool but also in a wider social context as ‘responsible’ design takes on greater importance.

In a different vein, as technology makes the practical tools of design creation simpler for the non-designer which iscausing professional and commercial conflict within the design industry. On the flip side, design is taking on an increasingly important role in creating and refining services.

The module concentrates on design ethics and practicalities of design in various specific areas: in particular politics, cultural identities, sexuality and environmental (green) design.

Learning Outcomes

1.Understand the reciprocal influences of design and society in cultural, economic and political contexts;
2. Demonstrate critical analysis in the evaluation of research evidence or material;
3. Utilise a range of communication skills through one or more of the following: written, visual, oral, aural or computer mediated communication.

Learning and Teaching Assessment Strategy

Themodule is taught through lectures with specific directed learning, screenings and/or independent study. Lectures will be supported by material available on the e-learning portal.

The assessment for the module has two elements: a formative poster presentation to be given by students in collaboration with others in weeks 10 and 11, and a summative written account or reflection on thatpresentation to be submitted individually on Friday 27 January 2012 by 4pm.
