What are they?

This is a generally used expression which fits well with the concept of virtual libraries. Nowadays people try to make optimal use of the advances of the “digital age”. Also libraries start to think how they can keep up with the developments of these days. A solution is to start up “virtual Libraries”
The term “virtual library” alsoknown as the “electronic library” or “library without walls”, is usually used to refer to electronic information resources available within the library or remotely accessible but which do not have a physical presence, in contrast with the traditional or print-based library.

Esta es una expresión usada en general que se ajusta biencon el concepto de bibliotecas virtuales. Hoy en día la gente trata de hacer un uso óptimo de los avances de la "era digital". También las bibliotecas empiezan a pensar cómo pueden mantenerse al día con los desarrollos de estos días. Una solución es poner en marcha "Bibliotecas virtuales"
El término "biblioteca virtual", también conocida como la "biblioteca electrónica" o "biblioteca sinparedes", se utiliza generalmente para referirse a los recursos de información electrónica disponibles en la biblioteca o de acceso remoto, pero que no tienen una presencia física, en contraste con la biblioteca tradicional o basado en la impresión.

From paper to virtual
In the antiquity there were the collections of hand-written sources. These are the roots of the present libraries.
The firstlibrary was the library of the Egyptian king Sjepseskaf. This represented a court archive (2575 B.C.)
Later on these collections were managed by monasteries and academies. Especially monasteries were between 600 and 1250 the most important storages of that time.
When the printing was invented, the total size of these collections raised. The function of a library didn’t change as time passed and theywere considered as “the memory of humankind”
A few years ago people had no idea about what a virtual library was. To find the information they needed, they had to put on their jackets and shoes, and go to the library. Most of the time they searched a long time before they found what they were looking for.
Nowadays and as a result of the digital developments, the concept of a virtual surroundingof information wins terrain. Because of the increased size of information which is digital available, people aren’t forced to go to a library.
Consequently libraries were forced to make their collection in a user-friendly
matter available on the web. To do this, libraries have the choice to collaborate with other libraries to construct together a network of structured information. Anotherpossibility is to construct a virtual library (or digital library) on their own.

En la antigüedad existían las colecciones de fuentes manuscritas. Estas son las raíces de los presentes bibliotecas.
La primera biblioteca era la biblioteca del rey egipcio Sjepseskaf. Esto representó un archivo de la corte (2575 aC)
Más tarde estas colecciones fueron manejados por losmonasterios y academias. Especialmente monasterios fueron entre 600 y 1250 los almacenes más importantes de la época.
Cuando se inventó la imprenta, el tamaño total de estas colecciones crió. La función de una biblioteca no cambió con el paso del tiempo y se les considera como "la memoria de la humanidad"
Hace unos años la gente no tenía idea de lo que era una biblioteca virtual. Para encontrar lainformación que necesitaban, tenían que poner en sus chaquetas y zapatos, e ir a la biblioteca. La mayoría de las veces se han buscado desde hace mucho tiempo antes de encontrar lo que estaban buscando.
