Advances in the phylogeny and classification of the expanded Cattleya
relationships of subtribe Laeliinae based onmolecular data, and the inclusion of Sophronitis and the Brazilian species previosly included in Laelia. Based on multigene phylogenies, a new classification has been proposed to accomodate the 115species currently accepted. This new classification splits Cattleya into four subgenera, three sections and five series. Now that the main focus on delimiting the main subgroups in the genus isvanishing, research should turn to species phylogenies within each of the taxonomic entities. Overall molecular variation in Cattleya is quite low, in a similar way to most genera of Laeliinae. A pilot studyhas been made to search for variable regions and quantify how many are necessary for a well-resolved phylogeny of the bifoliate Cattleyas (subgenus Intermediae, 21 species), using over 19 DNAregions (plastid, Nuclear, and Single-Copy Nuclear). Of these, 16 could be satisfactorily amplified and sequenced. The data were analysed with Maximum Parsimony, Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian Inference,and analyses of congruence and reticulation were also performed comparing the diferente datasets. The most promising regions were ITS (nuclear), trnD-T, rpl32-trnL, trnL-F and ycf1 (plastid), andagt1 (nuclear single-copy). The data indicated that bifoliate Cattleyas belong to three distinct lineages, but some species seems to be of ancient hybrid origin, which can be compared with theirpeculiar morphological characters.
