An experimental study on the relationship between surface area and absorption rate.

Research Question: How does the mass of the potato affect the relationship between surface area and absorption rate using distilled water?

Hypothesis: I predict that when cut the potato with the cork borer, the mass of the potato will increase due to osmosis, the volume of the potato will be filled withwater causing the percentage of the potato to increase.
Osmosis is the movement of water particles from a higher to a low concentration till it reaches equilibrium.

Variables:
Independent: Size of potatoes slices
Dependent: Mass (Percentage change) of potato slices
Fixed:
Always destiled water
Same temperature and type of water used
Same submersion time in water

Apparatus list

Boilingtube
Ruler
3 potatos
knife
scalpel
5 cilinders 25 mil.
destilled water
High quality scales(to 100 grams)
cork borer
stop watch
tweezers
Tissue as much as you need

Method:

1.Before starting the experiment hands need to be washed properly and put you hair up if need it
2. First, take all the apparatus that are mentined in the apparatus list above.
3.Collect 3 potatos then get thecork and make sure the weight is the same
Then get 5x 3chunk of potatos (difference sizes), use the ruler to masure and make sure their weight its the same.
After that get one chunk of potato and see how much it weights.
Then get a boiling tube fill half of it with distilled water and get the stop watch.
Get the tweezers and get ready to put the potato into the boiling tube filled half ofit with destilled water, leave it for 5 minute.
After doing that, and see how much it the mass of the potato weights after left it for 5 mins time it with the stop watch.
Then record it both anwers
Repeat x2 step 5,6,7 and 8 all over again with another chunk of potato same size as step 4.
Then get a bigger chunk of potatos (difference sizes), use the ruler to masure and make sure theirweight its the same.
After that get one chunk of potato and see how much it weights.
Then get a boiling tube fill half of it with destiled water and get the stop watch.

Repeat x2 step 11,12,13,14,15 and 16 all over again with another chunk of potato same size as step 11
Then get a bigger chunk of potatos (difference sizes), use the ruler to masure and make sure their weight its the same.
After that you get one chunk of potato and see how much it weights.
