Abstract
The purpose of this research is to analyze what are the economic and environmental effects of the growth in use of biomass as an energy source as well as its potential in Spain
Last years concern aboutthe preservation of the environment and the ozone layer, as well as the reduction of other natural resources as oil or coal, has given more importance to the renewable energies and its development. Last year in Spain, the Plan for Renewable Energies 2011-2020 has given more important paper to the biomass because it’s potential and the need for renewable and autochthonous sources.
This researchtries to put all (the advantages and disadvantages) together of this biomass growth, using secondary data both qualitative and quantitative, coming from different sources as official, non-official, research reports, newspaper articles etc...
Finally, a conclusion will be developed summarizing and answering the aims of the research

Introduction

This piece of research willanalyse, based on the growth of the biomass as a source of energy during the last years, how this growth affects the economy, the potential of this energetic source and if this growth is positive to the environment as well as the future of this energy source. These three aspects, economic, energetic and environmental are known as the energetic mix. All of these will be done focusing the research onthe government data about energies, reports about the biomass and journal articles concerning this energy.
This topic has been chosen because the increasing concern about the environment and renewable energies during the last years. In Spain, last year, the new plan for renewable energies (Energy Renewable Plan 2011-2020) was made and this new plan introduces important innovations regardingbiomass and other renewable sources, giving to them more importance than years ago, so new information and data about this energy is appearing.
This will be both, a qualitative and quantitative study. Secondary data will be used in order to get enough information about the topic and for answer all the aims and objectives and make a good conclusion. Data will be collected from government documents,especially to understand what are the plans and the future for the biomass in the next years. Information will be gathered also from academic articles in order to understand the environmental effects of the use of this energy. Moreover, agencies reports will be looked to understand the economic impact that this new energy has.
With all of these, this research will be carried on, trying to fill theexisting gap about this relatively new energy and putting all these information together.
