Title: “Displaced: The Cuban-American Lack of Identity”

ABSTRACT

In the construction of this paper, I focus on the developmentof the Cuban American identity. It forms an analysis through the use of unknown personalities and their continued search for exclusivity in a “home-land” in order to create an awareness of the lackof entirety felt by many Latin American immigrants, in this case, Cuban. As Cuban immigration has grown into the United States since their revolution in 1959, the separation between a Cuban and aCuban American and further between a Cuban-American and an American has become more and more distinct. The exile and fleeing from the transforming government on the island left people distanced fromother family members and relinquished of a uniqueness or totality of who they are. This is evident in many literary works of the years immediately before and after the revolution, and continuing intoday’s written work by authors of this ethnicity. “Loving Che” by Ana Menendez, represents the literary framework for my research and for the main idea that a Cuban immigrant residing in the UnitedStates, or even a citizen of America with Cuban parents is displaced in both places in which one would call “home.” Using interesting narration techniques, the author neither gives a name to the femaleCuban protagonist nor ever allows her to conclude her search for her father. Through this literary tool, the text has evolved notions that further present me with the opportunity to develop theoriesregarding how an exiled or displaced Cuban American has yet to fully experience wholeness within the country of residence, within a separated family or within their culture. This is done byreferring to feelings of being in solitude in whichever country you currently reside.
