My name is Erik Montaleza, I’m from Ecuador and I am going to talk to someone who has impacted mylife in certain ways. He’s an artist from Puerto Rico, born in February 23 of 1978. His name is René Pérez Joglar, the lead singer and songwriter of Calle 13, a band which is formed by stepbrothers. Themain integrants of this band are “Residente” (René Pérez), “Visitante” (Eduardo Cabra) and their sister Ileana Cabra aka “PG-13”. Calle 13 is noted for its eclectic musical style, often usingunconventional instrumentation in its music, which distances the group from the reggaeton genre. The band is also known for its satirical lyrics as well as social commentary about Latin American issues andculture.
I started listen Calle 13 when they released their single “"¡Atrévete-te-te!". I wasn’t that interested in their music at that time. An alternative music using different kinds of instrumentsmade this band more interesting and one of my favorites every time I hear a new song. Years later they made music where it interested me not only because of the rhythm of their music, the lyrics oftheir work had a message which made listen more and more to their music. They were talking about life, issues in Latin-America, the corruption, the injustice; and not only about girls in a boat likeother reggaeton artists do.
The thing that more made me listen more to their music was the message were Rene wants to unify the people of all the countries of Latin-America. Like in the song “Pal’ Norte”he wrote about the illegal emigrants who left their country to have a better future in their life and a better future to their families, the inhuman difficulties that every emigrant have to passthrough to be in the US. With this song he leave a message where every emigrant feel identify. Even I didn’t come to this country illegal, I feel identify with this song too. Another song where he talks...
