This is known as “spanking”. Itmay work sometimes, but the truth is that it has many side-effects, and hurts in many ways. Corporal punishment is not effective discipline. Most parents make use of the "time out" as a formof discipline with our kids. We want to teach them lessons and help them to grow up to become responsible human beings. For many, this and other forms of discipline have replaced physical punishment. Suchpunishment is relatively widespread in the United States compared to many other nations of the world, however.
The American Psychological Association did an investigation regarding the subject.Psychologist Elizabeth Thompson Greshoff of the National Center for Children in Poverty at Columbia University looked at both positive and negative behaviors in children associated with corporal punishment.The general results where that this children in adulthood have criminal or antisocial behavior, aggression and abuse their own children or partner. This method has more negative outcomes, onlyhurting the child.
You may say that some children are hard, and only behave if you use corporal punishment, but this will not bring a long term solution, only many side effects. In an interview with acurrent psychology student, corporal punishment is not needed for discipline; there are many other methods for controlling behavior. Spanking is never needed, he says.
