Anorexia in the UK
Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by refusal to maintain a healthy body weight and an obsessive fear of gaining weight. Itdenotes any symptomatic loss of appetite and is not strictly accurate. The cause of anorexia nervosa is unknown, although it's likely that both inherent biological factors and factors in the person's socialenvironment play a part. The disease is mainly encountered in the Western world and is more common among women in certain professions, such as models and ballet dancers. Anorexia nervosa is one ofthe most expensive diseases in the world because of the number of specialists and treatments that should be used when the disease is already advanced. It requires a psychiatrist to give to the patientanti-depression pills, a nutritionist for a diet, a psychologist to make the patient understand that his mind is distorted, a primary care physician to check and see how the recovery goes and acardiologist (just in case where the patient can’t eat solid food) for intravenous feeding.
Anorexia Nervosa is more common in women than men, but people of all ages and backgrounds can suffer from thedisease.
I found some statistics from various UK organizations, which were all obtained from their corresponding websites:
Mind Organization:
Says that in the UK, 1 in 100 women between 15 and 30 yearsold, suffer from anorexia. There are also reports that show that girls as young as five years of age have weight concerns, and think about going on a diet.
Beat Organization:
Shows approximately 11people in 100,000 develop anorexia nervosa each year.
The Royal College of Psychiatrists:
Found out that anorexia nervosa is most likely to strike during the mid-teenage years. Anorexia affectsapproximately 1 in 150 fifteen-year-old females, and 1 in 1000 fifteen-year-old males.
About 40 percent of people with anorexia recover completely but unfortunately around 30 percent of anorexia...
