Chevron-Texaco case
The Chevron-Texaco case has been an extremely debatable issue concerning an environmental related problemthat involves legal, human health, economic and even political tension and struggle. The presence of Chevron’s petroleum enterprises in Ecuador´s Amazon Region around the mid 1900´s have caused apolemic trial given the consequences of oil exploitation and environmental impact that are the apparent causes of many human health problems that appeared in a greater percentage range since the oilspills underground and all over the rivers have somehow devastated Amazon Regions’ native tribes lives starting with the lack of clean water, the increasing mortality rates of people and cattle, and thedestruction of natural resources all around the Amazon Region.
We are not talking about only one human group that’s been affected by the oil spills and in general by the environmental impact causedby the processes of oil obtainment. We are talking about several Ecuadorian Amazonian tribes including the shuar, kichwas, sionas, secoyas and huaorani who’s future looks darker as time goes by.
TheChevron-Texaco oil spills throughout the whole of the Amazon Region’s rivers and soil is defined as 30 times bigger than the Exxon Valdez oil spill incident (1989) in which “Exxon Valdez spilledapproximately 10.9 million gallons of its 53 million gallon cargo of Prudhoe Bay crude oil. Eight of the eleven tanks on board were damaged. The oil would eventually impact over 1,100 miles ofnon-continuous coastline in Alaska, making the Exxon Valdez the largest oil spill to date in U.S. waters.” (1)
