FIELD STUDY
Teaching objectives and organisational instructions
The aim of the field study is to illustrate one topic studied during the course (tool, system, etc.) within thecontext of a real company. It provides the opportunity to:
• observe the way the tools and concepts presented in class are implemented in a given company
• carry out an initial diagnosticanalysis of real systems in a company using the theoretical notions discussed in class
• analyse any differences between theory and practice and sketch out an analysis of these differences
Thestudy involves the presentation and analysis of a real system that has been set up by a company and which relates to one of the course topics: performance measurement indicators, a department’s dashboard,the budgeting procedure, the system for monitoring results, how economic measurement systems are indexed to compensation schemes, etc. Given the calendar of the field study, it is advisable tochoose from the topics covered in the first part of the course.
Your contact person might be an operational manager in charge of a division of a company, a manager in charge of a support department, ora controller. This may be a person who uses the system described, someone who participated in designing it, or any person directly or indirectly involved with the system.
WORK REQUIRED
Thework to be done entails the following:
- an initial interview with a manager in order to choose a system and obtain a basic description of it
- a structured discussion with the professorafter the first interview in order to bring out the salient points and determine what information still needs to be completed
- a second, detailed, interview with the manager, possibly bytelephone or email, in order to complete the description
- a written report
The report (about 10 pages) must include:
- a short introduction
- a succinct description of the company’s...
