By the turn of the 15th century, Europe began to realize the necessity of expanding their trade system and sovereignty onto new territory. Such need driven by greed and bythe curiosity of explorers and navigational enthusiasts like Christopher Columbus whom, by mistake, discovered what we now know as America.
Though the entrenched endeavor by Columbus was far frombeing boring, it was of extreme importance because his explorations scientifically supported the notion of the earth being round. However, what became of more importance was that the Spanish settlement inthe Americas posed a new set of ideas and clashes between two societies that had never met. The cultural exchange between these ethnic groups and the latter miscegenation of the Spaniards and thenative people; not only gave birth to a new race but also obliterated another because of sexually transmitted diseases. The colonization also brought literacy, more advanced techniques and knowledge to alesser modern society, and in consequence, the natives ultimately adopted most of the Spaniards doctrine just as an ultimate resource in order to survive.

First, it is important to understand thetenets and differences between a military conquest and the colonization of a territory. Even though both relate to each other, one of the main differences is that in a military conquest, violence isthe predominant nature of the settlement whereas colonization is gradual in time but not in manner; violence might still exist but as tool to enforce the objectives of settlement.
Columbus voyagesmain objective was to discover new sources for gold, bring new species to Europe and to extend their trade system by finding a new navigational route to Oriental Asia.
