Differently Similar

Beowulf and Sir Gawain are two characters from different historical periods, which are portrayed as extraordinary heroes and honorable warriors of their time. They holdsimilar and at the same time opposite characteristics that place them both to these categories. Courage, loyalty, and honor during the quests performed, are equally reflected in both stories since thetwo men are willing to risk it all to achieve their goals, but the path and the motivations that each one of them follows to get there is different due to their distinct personalities.Beowulf and Sir Gawain were both motivated to set off on a quest in order to accomplish their heroic duties. It was this kind of task that correlate these two characters, consequently categorizing themboth as honorable heroes. It was Beowulf who “ Chose the mightiest men he could find,/ The bravest and best of the Geats, fourteen/ In all, and led them down to their boat;” (120-123). He was ready forbattle and ready to defeat Grendel, the horrendous monster that was hunting the mead hall. Likewise, Sir Gawain definitely kept his word by returning a year later to meet with the Green Knight withwhom he had once promised to visit. “He put his spurs to Gringolet, plunged down the path,/ Shared through the heavy thicket grown up by the woods/ And rode down the steep slope to the floor of thevalley;” (1-3). This was the beginning of Sir Gawain’s solitary journey before facing his adversary. Both Beowulf and Sir Gawain acquire a desired goal, and pursue it with the utmost diligence andcommitment. Being part of an isolated journey is what epic heroes do to demonstrate their courage and win pride, which in this case, both heroes follow.
