Esto fue cierto incluso en el caso de la bomba atómica." Esta cita es exacta al decir que Estados Unidos "ha hecho menos que su contribución proporcional a los avances de la ciencia básica", pero es engañosa en la medida en que implica que los estadounidenses han hecho una gran partede las principales aplicaciones de la ciencia pura a la ingeniería . The history  of engineering is but one segment of the great historical narative, but inlike some other histories itrecords a human activitywhich is cumulative and progressive.``progressive´´ in this sense does not connote any jugdment of values but merely indicates advances built upon and including previously existing knowledge. The history of engineering depicts a section of that central theme of history which reveals the development of civilization.
 
engineering has not been degined satisfactorily inasingle sentence. In 1828 the british architect Thomas Tredgold, probably the first to make the attempt, called it ``the art of directing the great sources of power in nature for the  use and concenience of man.´´ It was so defined in the charter of the  Instution of Civil Engineers of wich Thomas Telford was the first president. Tredgold´s simple and consice definition may have been measurablysatisfactory for his generation when steam transportation was a not too successful  novelety and  when only a few scientists vaguely senced the possibilities inherent in the mysterious electri current. The profession has, however, expanded so rapidly through  the decades since that the dozens  of definitions which have been framed by lexicographers, even by engineering organizations beginning in thei88os, no longer seem adequate.
