Controversy about transgenics
Genetically modified foods or GMOs are those that include in their composition some ingredients from organism that have incorporated a gene from another species.Thanks to the biotechnology, it is possible to transfer a gene from an organism to other one to provide him with some special quality which he lacks
But .. ¿why is there so much controversy about GMOs inthe world?
The upside of the OMGs is:
- Better quality of seed grains.-- by modifying something in their DNA, can enhance their quality and concluding, Improve the health of the person who eatsthem.
-Higher levels of protein in forage cultivation which is cattle feed.- cultivation that might improve the quality of the meat of these animals, too.
-Tolerance to droughts and floods.-Forinstance, the promoters of the project in the world argue that the genetically modified maize could add two million tons of maize during the year, able to feed nearly 21 million people.
-Fewer quantity ofwater. - a good example is the rice. The water demand of the rice cultivations can be until three times higher than other cultures as the maize. The modification that is wanted to realize allowsimproving the adjustment of the cultures to the environmental conditions without altering the quality and safety of the food.
The downside of the OMGs is:
-There are scientist that defend transgenics.Nevertheless, Some scientists argue that there is more than enough food in the world and that the hunger crisis is caused by problems in food distribution and politics, not production. They say that weneed biodiversity intensification that works with nature’s nutrient and water cycles, not against them.
- Another concern is the possible escape of the transferred genes towards populations ofnatural plants by the transmission of pollen. The introduction of transgenic plants resistant to pesticides carries a high risk that these genes move to the natural herbs. If this modification happens,...
