Cool Stuff
Yesterday, May 18, 1980, there was the biggest disaster of Washington State history. Mt. St Helens erupted at 8:32 AM, blowing its north face away. There was an earthquake that caused the north face to fall away. When the giant chunk of volcano was removed, there were great amounts of molten, gas, steam and rock that weresuddenly exposed to a lower pressure. This changed caused lava and pyroclastic rock to spew from the volcano and move toward Spirit Lake at avalanche speeds.
Not only was there anexplosion, there were other devastating repercussions of the blast. The eruption cloud rose 80,000 feet in the air. Ash from the cloud was deposited over eleven states.According to Washingtonian Joel Vincent, he could see the effects of the explosion in his hometown of Leavenworth.
“I was playing golf with my friends and all of a sudden the skywas black. Ash was covering the sky and falling like rain,” said Vincent.
Due to the heat of the explosion, entire glaciers on the volcano melted, making volcanic mudslidesthat reached as far as the Columbia River. These mudslides reduced hundreds of square miles of land to wasteland.
On top of the land being destroyed, there were 57 people thattragically perished in the disaster. Three notable deaths are Harry Truman an innkeeper, Reid Blackburn a photographer and David Johnston a geologist. There were also thousandsof animals who also lost their lives in the blast.
There are going to be severe consequences for the people in the surrounding area. People are going to be out of work due todevastation of the environment destruction of businesses. The extensive damage is going be expensive to fix. It is estimated that the bill will be upwards of one billion dollars.
