LITHOSPHERE – Part 2

1. State the fossil fuel concept, then name and characterize the different types of fossil fuels.

Fossil fuel is a natural resource that comes of very old fossil living organisms. Types of fossil fuels: oil, natural gas and coal.
Coal: Is a black rock, which is very useful because it gives out heat as it burns. Where the coal is today, 300 millions years ago wereforest (similar to tropical forests). As older trees and plants died, the vegetation decomposed on the swampy forest floors. In time, it formed a thick layer peat. Later, rivers covered the peat with deposits with deposits of mud and sand. Over millions of years, mud and sand were compressed into sedimentary rocks and the peat hardened into coal.
Oil and natural gas: these were formed from thedecomposition of plants and dead creatures, which were collected on layers on the sea bed. These living organisms rotted and formed a tiny place of oil. Their remains were covered by mud and sand. The sand was compressed into a sandstone rock. The oil and gas separated and occupied the spaces into rocks and as gas is lighter, it rose to the top, and oil is under the gas.

2. Read the text“Formation of coal, oil and natural gas” and then write down short and meaningful information regarding the difference between their origins.

Coal comes form formed forests, while oil and natural gas come from the remains of plants and animals collected in the sea bed.

3. Explain clearly how oil is explored and extracted by producing a serial of annotated drawing.

Holes are made wheregeologists think that oil is present.
Drilling machines is used to where large deposits are found.
In the sea, drilling platforms are placed over the deposits.
Extraction is a highly mechanized process. Few workers are needed.
When oil is extracted, gas too so a red flame can be seen but now if the gas deposit is large, gas is extracted too.

4. Analyse figure 1.22 in page 21 and then write ageneral conclusion for each one of the primary energies evolution.

In the last 20 years, the most used primary energies were oil, coal, nuclear, hydroelectricity and natural gas, in that order. All energies consumption rose, but coal was the most increasing energy consumption and oil was the less.
The most quantity of energy provides from fossil fuels. One of the less used is thehydroelectricity energy which is the only renewable energy between these.

5. Analyse figure 1.23 in page 22 and give reasons for the differences between regions.
The poorest countries with many rural areas are the ones that use biomass in an important percentage of their total energy.

6. Complete figure 1.24 with the information provided by the text.

Nuclear energy is produced by fission.Atoms are split in a nuclear reactor using uranium.
This reaction releases heat energy.
A gas takes the heat from the reactor to the boiler.
Here water is turned into steam (vapour).
The vapour is used to drive the turbines.
Turbines work the generators and make electricity.

The radiation has to be shield around the reactor to protect workers.

7. Find extra information regarding thelatest nuclear power station accident.

No

8. Produce a chart with the data contained in figure 1.25, by grouping the figures by continent: then write down an analysis for both the map and the chart representing the production of coal.

ok

9. Compare your previous analysis with the information provided by figure 1.26.

ok

10. Explain the patterns of energy global trade by usingan annotated map.

ok

11. Read table 1.5 in page 25. Then, produce an appropriated map portraying both the locations and the figures of oil production.

ok

12. Write down a detailed analysis for figure 1.27 and then state a general conclusion for both charts.

A quarter of the world total oil production is of Middle East.
The more consumer countries are the developed ones:...
