Key CSR areas for NH and hotel sector.
At NH they decided that the key actions to begin with being responsible are rational use of and respect for existing resources, from a sustainable pointof view in the business cycle, planning, design and construction of the hotels. Also they started to implement practices in their everyday operation and the service that they provide to customers.

They have divided their policies in environmental performance and social performance. Inside the environmental performance they have developed policies in areas such as management system (installingcontrol systems for environmental policies), energy consumption, emissions to the air and water, wastes, water consumption and paper/plastics. As well, they have started a policy in order to prevent the climate change, which includes green energies, care of the biodiversity, etc.

Regarding the social policies, they have divided it in those which affect the employees: as health and safety,internal communication, trainings programmes performance management, recognition programme, etc. On the other hand, regarding to the society, they have created and developed an International Community Involvement programme “Up!” for the People based intheir hospitality business. They have divided this programme in Up for hospitality (The Company has designed sustainable initiatives that allow it toplace its business at the service of NGOs and foundations worldwide), Up for opportunities (International training and apprenticeship programme for young people at risk of social exclusion and the disabled in the chain’s hotels), and Up for volunteering (This NH Hoteles scheme encourages employees to propose Corporate Volunteer ideas in which they can be actively involved, promoting the Company’ssolidarity and responsibility values).

Having researched other hotels chains such as Sol Melia Hotel chain, we have compared these main areas of NH´s CSR policies with these hotels in order to see if this division of policies is general for the most of the sector. After all, we have arrived to the conclusion that among the big hotel chains it is common to have all these policies (although insome cases they appear gathered in some different ways).
