Hawaii, a chain of islands in the Pacific Ocean, is famous for its spectacular beaches, its volcanoes, its fabulous sunsets, and its friendly people. It has good weather and warm water all year. They say it's always sunny somewhere on the islands. it has some of the best surfing in the world. So it's not surprising that it's a very popular vacation spot.
Tourism hasn’t alwaysbeen big in Hawaii. The first people to live there were probably Polynesians from Tahiti. Europeans didn't visit the islands until the eighteenth century. Then whalers came from all over the world in the nineteenth century. They liked the warm weather and tropical fruit such as pineapple, guava, and coconut. Later, travelers and traders from Japon, China, Australia, and the United States came.Today, you can fly 3.378km south west of San Francisco and be there in about three hours.
Hawaii became America's 50th state in 1959. Hawaiians still have their own culture and language. There are only twelve letters in their alphabet: a, e, h, i, k, l, m, n, o, p, u, and w. but that doesn't mean the language is easy to learn. For instance, the longest word in Hawaiian in humuhumunukunukuapua'a. it'sthe name of fish, and it means "fish with a pig's nose". Most Hawaiians just call it the "humu". Hawaiian children often learn the hula when they're very young. A hula is a dance that tells a story. it is usually about a hero or a chief. and all Hawaiian’s enjoy "luaus"- beach parties with dancers, storytellers, and singers. luaus used to be just for important people, but now any visitor to hawaiican take part and try the roast pig and other food.
hawaii used to make money from fruit plantations and fishing. these are still important, but its biggest industries today are sugarcane processing, coffe, and, above all, tourism.
