Nuestra Señora Santa María de la Asunción(Our Lady Saint Mary of the Assumption) is one of the oldest cities in South America. As the capital of the Paraguayan Republic, it is the seat of the three powers of state; it controls the main economic activities of the country and represents the axis of the industrial, service, trading, and banking sectors.
The capital is located on the left bank of the Paraguay River, which separatesnorthwest from the Western Region of the Country, and south from the territory of Argentina, in front of the confluence of the rivers Pilcomayo and Paraguay. Asunción, with a total surface area of 117km2and 512.112 inhabitants by 2002 (average of 4.377 persons per km2) (cf. DGEEC 2004a), has almost doubled its population density since the census of 1962. It is divided into 68 neighborhoods and has thenation’s largest coverage of basic services: almost ¾ of the households have electricity and piped water.
