Determiners
Determiners are function words used to specify the kind of reference a noun has. They vary in the kind of noun head they occur with: countable nouns (singular and plurar) anduncountable nouns.
There are different tipes of determiners:
•Indefinite article: a cat/ a car (this type only occurs with singular countable nouns)
•Definite article: The cat/ The dogs/ The sugar (thistype can occur with the three different noun tipes)
•Possesive: my car/ your books/ my sugar (this type can occur with the three different noun tipes)
•Demonstrative: This table/ those houses/ thismilk (this type can occur with the three different noun tipes)
•Quantifier: every book/ each paper/ some chocolate/ all the books/ enough chairs (this type can occur with the three different nountipes)
Numeral: One table/ two chairs (this type can occur only with countable nouns)
Some times more than one determiner occurs in the same noun phrase. In this cases, the determiners occur in afixed order, so we can distinguish between central determiners, post determiners and predeterminers.
“all the three chairs were painted”
All: predeterminer
The:central determiner
Three: post determiner
•Predeterminers: all, both, half, multipliers (double, twice)
•Central determiners: articles, demonstrative determiners, possesive determiners•Postdeterminers: ordinal numbers, some, other, next / cardinal numbers, quantifyng determiners
Collective nouns behave in a similar way to quantifyng determiners, since they qualify a following noun interms of quantity or type. In this cases, is the noun that follows the quantifyng noun that behaves like the head of the noun phrase.
