The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) was first administered in 1964 and has been taken by more than 23 million candidates. More than 6,000 educational institutions in 110 countries accept TOEFL scores. It measures the ability of nonnative speakers of English touse and understand North American English. The TOEFL test measures English language proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing and is offered on computer in most regions of the world through its Internet-based version. In areas where access to computer testing is limited, a paper-and-pencil version of the test is administered. In this unit you will become familiar with the mostimportant information about the TOEFL test, the different versions, the sections that are part of it and the time limits for each section

1.1 Different TOEFL test versions
The Educational Testing Service ( ETS ), international organization in charge of many proficiency tests including the TOEFL, administers two different versions of TOEFL tests: Internet Based Test and, paper-based test.

a) ThePaper-Based Test (PBT)
This version was the first to be released. It contains the following sections with its corresponding time limits:

✓ Listening Comprehension measures the ability to understand spoken English. Candidates listen to different conversations or talks and answer multiple choice questions concerning the listening passage.
✓ Structure and Written Expression measures the ability to recognize standard written English and identify grammatically correct English. Test takers either choose thecorrect option that completes the sentence or identify the misuse of language.
✓ Reading Comprehension measures the ability to read and understand non-technical written material. Examinees answer multiple choice questions about the reading that may include comprehension of ideas or understanding of vocabulary items.
✓ The Test of Written English (TWE) is also required for everyone takingthe paper-based test. Test takers are given 30 minutes to write a short essay on an assigned topic. This test is not included in the institutional type of test.
Paper-based scores for Section 1 (Listening Comprehension) and Section 2 (Structure and Written Expression) range from 31 to 68, while the scores for Section 3 (Reading Comprehension) range from 31 to 67. The TOTAL paper-based test scoreis reported on a scale that ranges from 217 to 677. This score only includes section 1, 2 and 3 of the PBT. The TWE is scored separately from a scale of 0-6. You will find a PDF document in the RESOURCES SECTION named “Score Comparison Tables”. There you will find the equivalences in scores of the PBT, IBT, and the CBT versions of the TOEFL test.
In general, a minimum score of 457 corresponds tolevel B1 on the Common European Framework (CEF) while a minimum score of 560 corresponds to level C1. An acceptable TOEFL score depends entirely on the requirements of each institution. There is no specific passing or failing score. Official score reports are sent minimum five weeks after the test date to the specific test center.
