In the globalized world oftoday, star architects get their most spectacular commissions often from states and leaders who need not consult democratic committees or heed to planning regulations. Somewhat incongruously, progressive architecture flourishes in countries with repressive regimes. Still, economic, political, social and moral issues that pervade any globalized architectural practice tend to be ignored bycontemporary critics. They refuse any political or moral responsibility and disclaim the very possibility of resistance to economic or political power. This is not a new attitude. In the early 1920s, realizing that the time of critical, expressionist practice was over, Walter Gropius declared that what is needed is “a resolute affirmation” of the new conditions, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe demanded: “let usaccept the changed economic and social conditions as a fact. All these things go their way guided by destiny and blind to values.” Certainly, theory can function as ideology but can it also assume a more constructive, projective role of influencing future practice? This is just one of the questions examined by the 11th Bauhaus Colloquium in 2009.

In der globalisierten Welt von heute bekommen Star-Architekten ihre spektakulärsten Aufträge häufig von Staaten und Herrschern, die keine demokratischen Komitees oder Planungsregeln berücksichtigen müssen. Unpassenderweise floriert die progressive Architektur besonders in Staaten mit repressiven Regimes. Zeitgenössische Architekturkritiker neigen dazu, ökonomische,politische, soziale und ethische Gesichtspunkte, die jegliche globale architektonische Praxis durchdringen, zu ignorieren. Sie lehnen moralische Verantwortung ab und verneinen jede Möglichkeit des Widerstandes gegenüber ökonomischer oder politischer Macht. Dies ist keine neue Haltung. In den frühen 20er Jahren deklarierte Walter Gropius, der erkannt hatte, dass die Zeit der kritischen,expressionistischen Praxis vorüber war, dass eine „entschlossene Bejahung“ der neuen Bedingungen gebraucht werde. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe verlangte: „wir wollen die veränderten wirtschaftlichen und sozialen Verhältnisse als eine Tatsache hinnehmen. Alle diese Dinge gehen ihren schicksalhaften und wertblinden Gang.“ Sicherlich kann Theorie als Ideologie fungieren, aber kann sie auch eine konstruktivere,projektive Rolle der Einflussnahme auf zukünftige Praxis übernehmen? Dies ist eine der Fragen, die das 11. Bauhaus-Kolloquium 2009 untersuchen wird.
