The primary source for Shakespeare for Henry IV, Part 1 was the second edition of Raphael Holinshed’s Chronicles (1587).But Shakespeare also used the epic poem The Civil Wars Between the Two Houses of York and Lancaster, written in 1595 by the English dramatist and writer Samuel Daniel.

6. Identify and describe ONLY the principal characters:
a. Protagonists:
1. PrinceHarry – he is a young man, son of King Henry IV. His title is the Prince of Wales but his friends call him Hal. Even though Harry spends most of his time with robbers and with the low class he wishes to transform himself into a noble prince in the future. He is a heroic, brave and valiant character. The prince is the closest thing to a protagonist that this play offers. Prince Harry’s goal is toachieve honor and make his father acknowledge him.
2. King Henry IV – he is the ruler of England and father of Prince Harry and of Lord John of Lancaster. He feels insecure and not content with the title that he holds because he feels guilty of killing the previous king. Even though his name is the title of the play, he is not the main character, but he definitely provides the play a sense ofpower. He wishes for his son to become the prince that he should be and stop acting as a thief. His primary goal is to become a legitimate ruler for the nation.
3. Jack Falstaff – he is a fat old man between the ages of about fifty and sixty – five. He usually spends his time in taverns and makes his living as a thief. Falstaff is Prince Harry’s closest friend and seems to act as a sort ofmentor to him, instructing him on how to be a criminal. He is a lying but very comical that brings a great deal of humor to the play.
5. Lord John of Lancaster – he is the youngest son of the King and the brother of Prince Harry. John is a valiant and wise warrior that fought very bravely by his fathers army.
b. Antagonists:
1. Hotspur – he is about the age of Prince Harry, the son and heir ofthe Earl of Northumberland and the nephew of the Earl of Worcester. Hotspur’s real name is Henry Percy but he is also called Harry. He earned his nickname from his hastiness of actions in the battlefield. Hotspur is an impatient but also brave character that is obsessed with the idea of honor and glory. Hotspur is the main antagonist of the play. His goal is the common ambition between all of theantagonists, which is to battle and overthrow King Henry.
2. Earl of Northumberland – he is the father of Hotspur. He conspires and raises troops to attack the King but at the time of the battle falls ill and cannot participate in the war.
3. Earl of Worcester – he is the brother of Northumberland and the uncle of Hotspur. His real name is Thomas Percy. He is a manipulative and ambitiouscharacter that planned the rebellion against the king. The Earl of Worcester is also an opportunist that lies when he finds it convenient.
4. Glendower – he is the leader of the Welsh rebels. Glyndwr joins with the alliance to overthrow the king. He is very capable in battle and claims to be able to command great magic. He is mysterious and superstitious character that thinks of himself as...
