Drug abuse, like alcoholism, is a social and public health problem. Pushing the drugs underground, such as the prohibition of alcohol during the 1920s, only makes prices rise and attracts crime andpolice raids to poor communities. The prohibition also encourages organized crime because of the huge profits earned on the black market. Last year 6.290 people died in Mexico in government battlesagainst drug cartels. In the U.S., due to the strict drug laws are filling prisons in millions. However, global production of illegal drugs is higher than ever.
In the other hand, a drug is defined asa substance that changes the perception, sensation, mood and both physical and mental activity. It is certainly known that drug use is the cause of many ills, such as crime, violence, accidents, amongothers. That's why if you were to legalize its use would not end with the current problems, but on the opposing, would be giving rise to the problems that exist because of the drug addiction. That isthe importance of maintaining a society to fight against these harmful substances.
¿How can you eliminate the scourge of addiction and illicit drug trade?
The war on drugs has been a completefailure. The legalization of drugs and support services to communities is the real choice including the full financing for treatment. In 2002, only one fifth of drug resources were used forrehabilitation. Equally important is the elimination of poverty and lack of opportunity that make them attractive drugs. The illegal market caused by drug prohibition also creates serious social harm worldwide.The current drug war in Mexico is just the latest example. The U.S. encouraged chaos last year, when Congress passed the Merida Initiative, which allocated $ 1.300 million to Mexico and Central Americafor weapons and police training to combat drug cartels.
