Eating disorders
Each year, thousands of teens develop eating disorders, or problems with weight, eating,or body image.
An eating disorder is an obsession with food and weight that harms a person'swell-being. Although everybody worry about their weight sometimes, people who have an eating disorder go to extremes to keep from gaining weight. The most common eating disorders are anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa (usually called simply "anorexia" and "bulimia").But other food-related disorders, like binge eating, body imagedisorders, and food phobias, are becoming more and more common.
Eatingdisorders are serious medical illnesses. They often go along with other problems such as stress, anxiety or depression. Eating disorders can produce serious physical health problems, such as heartconditions or kidney failure.
Someone who have at least 15% less than the average weight for that person's height may not have enough body fat to keep organs and other body parts healthy. In severecases, eating disorders can lead to severe malnutrition and even death.
Anorexia
Anorexia nervosa is an illness that usually occurs in teenage girls, but it also can occur in teenage boys, and in adultwomen and men.
People with anorexia have a real fear of weight gain and a wrong view of their body size and shape ( they usually think they're fat even though they're very thin) As a result, theycan't maintain a normal body weight.
Many teens with anorexia restrict their food intake by dieting, fasting, or excessive exercise.
They are obsessed with being thin sothey hardly eat at all and the small amount of food they eat becomes an obsession. They may get so thin that they look like they're sick.
They are worry about how many calories they take in or how much fat is in their food. They maytake diet pills or laxatives to lose weight.
Anorexia isn't just a problem with food or weight. It's a way to use food and weight to deal with emotional problems.
