I have learnt a lot of things during these classes so I am very surprised about how many
customs, Cultures, values exist around the world that people practice.
It is important to understand the other’s ideas in order to respect their beliefs. All the religions
given in the class have been very meaningful for me so y choose to compare two of them which
are Judaism and Hinduism that took myinterest to know more about so.
I would like to compare these two religion, in order to do it I going to use two of their traditions
that are practiced for these both religion and find out their differences how they differ one another, funeral and wedding.
Jewish wedding
The procession: both the bride and the groom walk down the aisle accompanied by both
Parents. Traditionally, the rabbiwalks out first, followed by the groom and his parents, the
Grandparents, the groomsman, the bridesmaids, the flower girl and ring bearer, and the bride
and her parents.
The chupa: the wedding ceremony takes places under the chupa, which is a canopy on four
poles that is sometimes decorated. The chupa symbolizes that the bride and the groom are
creating a home together and that it willalways be open to receive guests.
The wedding ceremony: the wedding has two parts in the chupa. During the first part, the
bride and groom become betrothed and a blessing is recited over a cup of wine that the bride
and groom drink. Traditionally the groom puts a ring on the bride and then, the sheva brachot,
or seven blessings, are recited over another glasses of wine.

The ketubah: theketubah is a jewish wedding contract, the rabbi reads it under the chupa
after the ring ceremony. Usually, the ketubah is written in Aramaic, but today many jews use
Hebrew instead.

The breaking of glasses: at the conclusion of the ceremony, the groom smashes a glass with his
foot. One interpretation of this act is that the marriage will last as long as the glass is broken
“forever”.The other interpretation is that people need to remember those who are suffering
even in their greatest moments of joy. After the breaking of the glass, the guests yell,
“mazel tov” which means good luck.
Jewish funeral:
Upon the death of a jew, the eyes are closed, the body is covered and laid on the floor , and
candles are lit next to it. The body is never left alone as sign of respect. Those people who stay
with the body are called “shomerim” (guards). Eating and drinking are prohibited near the body.
Death bodies may not be cremated, and burial takes place as soon as possible after death
embalming and the removal of organs and fluids is prohibited, although there are allowances
for autopsies and organs donation. The former can be done if it would save a life or if localrequires it.
Funeral service may be held in the synagogue, in a funeral home, or the gravesite. The funeral
service is usually brief and simple.
people have to dress appropriately; proper attire for a funeral is a dress for
woman and a coat and tie for men. Funerals almost always start at exactly time people arrived
to the place a half-hour to a few minutes before the announced time. Themourners will either
be in a waiting room, seated in the front pews, or exiting from a car at graveside when the
service is about to begin. Also there are a guests book which is used to write your name in
order to let them know that you were there so you even won’t need to greet them
because that’s what the guests book is for, but if you are very close family or friends, it maybeappropriate to see the mourners before the service begin or approach them after the graveside
service. You may avoid any kind of joke or loudly conversations.
The rabbi or the cantor will lead the congregation in prayer during the service. The people there
may reply with AMEN at the appropriate times and those who are not Jewish should
participate only as they are comfortable.
