Summary and personal opinion.

Summary
Sophie Amundsen is a 15 years old girl that lives with her mother, whose life suddenly changes when she begins to receive some mysterious letters with no remittent. In each of them, some questions are posed, which make her think about things she had never considered before. The first letter she gets poses a short question: “Who are you?“She realizes she isn’t sure about the answer and begins to wonder whether she would have been a different person if her name had been different. These questions lead her to a different issue: “What is there after death?”
After a while, she looks in the mailbox and finds a new letter with a new question: “Where does the world come from?” Sophie is confused and she decides the best place to thinkwill be her secret hideout behind a bush of a garden, where she won’t be disturbed. Once there, she thinks of different theories that have explained this mystery, but finally gives up. She goes to the mailbox once more and finds out a card addressed to Hilde Moller from her father. She feels even more confused, why would a father send a card of felicitation to her daughter to Sofia’s address? Whowas Hilde? Her intuition tells her it is not a mere coincidence, the mysterious letters and the post card have to be related.
The next day Sophie finds it terribly hard to concentrate in class. She can’t stop thinking of what has happened and she loses all interest in what she used to enjoy. This makes her friend Jorunn angry as she cannot understand what is happening. However Sophie is lookingforward to getting home and check the mailbox. She is disappointed when she discovers there is no letter in it, but only some yellow envelopes, until she realizes one of them is for her. In it, she finds a personal course of philosophy.
The first lesson makes Sophie think in what common issues should all humans feel concerned about. Although each person is interested in different hobbies, thereare some questions whose answer may interest everybody. The unknown “philosophy teacher” begins explaining Sophie how philosophy was created and how people started practicing it due to astonishment.
Sophie feels exhausted after so much new information, but a new envelop is waiting for her. With it, Sophie learns that the world is weird, strange, mysterious… Even though humans forget about it andget used to it so they find it normal. The philosophy teacher explains that only children and philosophers have the capacity to feel amazed, and that the rest of adults lose that capacity when they grow old. Sophie agrees with this affirmation after experimenting with her mother. However, her mother starts to get worried about her weird behavior of the few last days, and she associates it todrugs.
The following day, she finds a letter of her father and together with it, another yellow envelope containing more philosophy lessons. In them, Sophie learns the history of mythology and philosophy, how people used to believe in mythical characters and stories (such as Tor and his hammer) to give an explanation to some natural phenomena like for example weather changes, droughts… Nevertheless,in Greece, some people began to make philosophical questions, which led them to reject mythological answers and think in rational explanations for natural processes.
The next letter she gets contains three more mysterious questions: “Is there any raw material from where all the rest comes from?” “Can water become into wine?” “How can water and earth become into a frog?” Sophie’s mother is the oneto find this letter and in her ignorance, she thinks that it is a love letter. Sophie prefers letting her mother think that, rather than explaining the truth so she tries to think of an answer to these questions, but she finds it pretty hard. To help her find the answers, another envelope is waiting for her when she gets back home from school. In it, Sophie discovers how mankind has meditated...
