In the article Feel the City’s Pulse? It’s Be-bop, Man!, the evolution of music in relation to the history of a certain part of the world isdescribed. The reader is able to learn about how jazz, swing and be-bop reflect the culture of the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s in the United States, mainly New Orleans. The reader is also able to gain knowledge onthe evolution of music through time and how history clearly influences this shift. “Bop began at roughly the same time as World War II” due to the fact that it was too costly for swing bands totravel; therefore, people attended accessible be-bop shows. In this time, “what hurt swing helped be-bop.” The same scenario will most likely play out in the future. Another important part of music is itsability to distinguish insiders from outsiders. People were able to recognize be-bop by its “wide-ranging allusiveness, its quicksilver expressivity, angular dissonance,” and its wide range ofrhythms. They were also able to distinguish the be-boppers themselves: “real New York intellectuals, the hippest, smartest men in town.” These two elements contribute to how music deeply influences itslisteners and creators.
