HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus; this is the virus that causes AIDS, It only affects human beings by weakening the immune system by destroying important cells that fightthe disease and infections. HIV is different from most other viruses because it attacks the immune system. The immune system gives our bodies the ability to fight infections. These are the most common ways in which HIV is transmitted from person to person:
by having sex with an HIV-infectedperson.
by sharing needles or injection equipment with an injection drug user who is infected with HIV.
from HIV-infected women to their babies before or during birth, or through breast-feeding afterbirth.
What is AIDS?
AIDS stands for Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. Acquired: means that the disease is not hereditary but develops after birth from contact with a disease-causing agent.Immunodeficiency: means that the disease is characterized by a weakening of the immune system. Syndrome: refers to a group of symptoms that indicate or characterize a disease. In the case of AIDS, thiscan include the development of certain infections. AIDS is the final stage of HIV infection. It can take years for a person infected with HIV, even without treatment, to reach this stage. Having AIDSmeans that the virus has weakened the immune system to the point at which the body has a difficult time fighting infections. When someone has one or more of these infections and a low number of Tcells, he or she has AIDS.
