urban expansion
with their industries, traffic jams and building, cities are often seen as new development in history. in fact the origin of cities goes back thousands of years and passes throughat least three distinct phases.
the first phase began between 5 and 6 thousand year ago with settlements that grew into what we call the river valley civilisations of mesospotamia, egypt ,india andchina. these settlements depended largely on agriculture and domesticated animals. however as civilisations grew in size and trade routes grew in number, these settlements became centres formerchants craftspeople, traders and govemment officials . the division between town and country, urban and rural had begun.

Con sus industrias, los atascos de tráfico y laconstrucción, las ciudades se ven a menudo como nuevo desarrollo de la historia. De hecho, el origen de las ciudades se remonta a miles de años, y pasa a través de al menos tres fases distintas.

the second phase in the development of cities came muchlater (mid 18º century) with the industrial revolution in europe . factories needed a large labour force and commercial activity created new oppotunities in cities. looking for employment and a betterlife, people moved from rural areas into cities in greater numbers than ever before.

the third phase began after the second world war. the largest and fasted growth in the worlds urban population...
