ESSAY – Report to Wordsworth – Boey Kim Cheng


Using the information obtained yesterday; write the paragraphs expanding the comparison and contrast of Cheng’s and Wordsworth’s poems.
Payattention to connectors, and linkers and connections between paragraphs.
When you have finished, write an appropriate introduction and conclusion.


The purpose of this essay is communicate thedifferences and similarities of Cheng’s poem ”Report to Wordsworth” and three very well know Wordsworth poems, "Ster bridge, sept. 3, 1802", “London 1802” and “The world is too much with us”. Bothpoets make reference to Nature and how is being damaged. Similarly, the four poems are sonnets. Nevertheless Cheng sonnet is written in an English/Shakespearean way (3 quatrains and a couplet), whileWordsworth applies an Italian/Petrachan structure (2 quatrains and 1 sextet).

To start with, while on Cheng’s poem, Nature needs Wordsworth, on Wordsworth’s, London needs Milton.
Chengaddresses himself to Wordsworth, an 18th century poet, telling him that Nature needs his help. Similarly, in lines 1 and 2 of Wordsworth’s poem “London 1802”, Wordsworth is addressing another poet. In thiscase it is Milton, who is being told that is needed. However it is no Nature who needs help, but England. Moreover, another difference is that since Wordsworth’s poet was written in the 18th century,the language used is much more old fashioned.

Another similarity mentioned on both poems; Cheng’s poem, and Wordsworth’s poem “The world is too much with us”, is the powers and main sources ofpowers are frozen as in stand by.
On Cheng’s poem, line 2, it is mentioned that Nature is laid waste, and Wordsworth also mentions that something has been laid waste, in this case the man’s powers.Furthermore, we can see both authors make reference to the sea and its gods, but giving a difference importance in the three poems, Cheng’s poem , and Wordsworths’ poems “The world is too much with...
