- Twain wrote this quote in his personal notebook #41 for the year 1897.

In the 19th century writers gave themselves a purpose, which was to portray theAmerican culture through a Great American Novel. In which they felt the need for the world to know and experience what was like to be a true American. In this journey they came across with thediversity and variety of ideas towards what a Great American Novel ought to be. Throughout Mark Twain’s writings, realism was used as way of representing the American experiences.
Mark Twain’s Americanexperience is remarkable on his capacity to create characters that reflect the most intimate microcosms of the America that he was witnessing. In order to allow the reader to question his values, he usessatire to heighten the subject matter. A combination of Twain’s and society’s point of view is given as he points out, “The Widow Douglas she took me for her son, and allowed she would sivilizeme”(Huckleberry page2) and were as the search for individuality and freedom was also longed for, “I got into my old rags and my sugar-hogshead again, and was free and satisfied.” (Huckleberry page2).Twain’sdescribes the place as what he would have like it to be “the east reddens up, and the river, and you make out a log-cabin in the edge of the woods, away on the bank on t'other side of the river“(Huckleberry page78) however he faces reality and points out “they've left dead fish laying around, gars and such, and they do get pretty rank” (Huckleberry page78).Twain’s highlights freedom andsatisfaction beyond to one’s first glance, he describes them as part of one’s individuality and self being. There is more than just the cover and as much as we can long for things, reality strikes us intoanalyzing our own existence.
