Out of all the “Greats”, I believe that Catherine the Great was the greatest. To begin with, she was a woman in an era where the women were still not taken seriously and capable, now days you cancount with one hand how many women are presidents. Elizabeth I of England had proved that women were able to rule a country and make it work. By the 18th century Catherine was going to prove it again.After Peter left the Russian throne, no one proved that they were capable of ruling Russia and 37 years had to pass for someone to prove themselves to the Russian people. Catherine was not evenblood related to Peter the Great, she married his son Peter III and that is how she got to the throne, but just the fact that she took a country by marriage and not because she had to rule because shewas the next heir is just astounding. Many historians believe she murdered her husband, other say that he died of illness but what would have happened if Peter III had not died what would Russia be?But that is another story, Catherine followed Peter the Great steps to westernize the Russian State. She took ideas from French and Italian people just to write her “Instruction” which shows heropened mind to other ideas. What I really like about her, is her interest in Education, it is said that she had to prove to her dad that she was capable to learn just to get an education. She founded theUniversity of Moscow, and issued other reforms for the nobility, their daughters and sons to be educated. I really like how she gave equal education to girls and boys, and even though many girls didnot attend to school the idea was there. It is said that when she got to her throne and met with the government no one knew how many provinces were there so she had to buy a map and from then sheeducated them and then for any noble that wanted to do a governmental service, they had to have an education.
