To think of those suffering with quadriplegia, cancer, terminalillnesses or people who are currently in vegetative states, can be disheartening. It is human nature to feel compassion and most people would not want to see others suffer from intolerable physicalpain, often caused by these illnesses. In cases of vegetative states, where patients are awake but not fully aware of their surroundings, family members sometimes decide to keep their loved ones connectedto an oxygen machine and assist them with feeding. However, this only prolongs the patient’s silent suffering and robs them of their right to choose not to continue living. Passive euthanasia occurs when the patient dies because the medical professionals either don't do something necessary to keep thepatient alive, or when they stop doing something that is keeping the patient alive.
