EUTHANASIA COMPOSITION
Should active euthanasia be made legal in all civilized societies nowadays? Discuss.

Active euthanasia has become one of the most controversial issues to be discussedtoday. This practice takes place when a medical professional (or someone else) deliberately causes the patient to die. It has therefore become an overwhelming difficult for governments to draw a lineseparating what should be allowed and what shouldn’t In Britain for example, it is illegal to undertake this process but in places such as the Netherlands, Belgium or Luxembourg, laws specifically permiteuthanasia.
The ethical argument is the most predominant, supporting that euthanasia weakens society´s respect for the sanctity of life. Moreover, it is believed that euthanasia accepts that somelives worth less than others and hence lead to ethical anarchy. On another hand, it is also thought that allowing euthanasia will lead to a worse care for the terminally ill, undermining the commitmentof doctors and nurses to saving lives and at the same time, discouraging the search for new cures and treatments for the ill.
Another strong point against active euthanasia is that it exposesvulnerable people to pressure to end their lives. Ill people may feel as a burden for their families and for society as a whole and hence may feel euthanasia is the only solution. People also consider thateuthanasia gives too much power to doctors. This point of view is reinforced by religious arguments that defend that this practice is against the word and will of God, believing that every human isthe creation of God and that only him can decide when someone’s life should end. Moreover, Christianity teaches that suffering has a place in God’s plan, and as Pope John Paul II said: “It is suffering,more than anything else, which clears the way for the grace which transforms human souls."
