FIRST PASS YIELD (FPY) CALCULATION

Definition

First Pass Yield (FPY) is a quality metric of a product performance. First pass yield is expressed as a percentage and it is calculated by dividingthe number of units passed right the first time all the routine tests process by the total number of tested units.

Intent

The main goal of tracking First Pass Yield is to drive QualityImprovement. Prioritization and improvement of the metric should help drive Quality improvement at the source and ultimately improve outgoing quality and customer satisfaction.

Application/Information• First Pass Yield is reported in percentage (%).
• Calculation of First Pass Yield should be owned and tracked by the manufacturing floor work teams, including supervisor and related supportpersonnel. First Pass Yield is best tracked and improved by the work group that owns the process.

Measurement Point

• At a minimum, FPY is measured at final routine tests area for every singleproduct line.

Further FPY measurement points or FPY Quality Gates may be identified through the Process Failure Modes and Effects Analysis and the support of the Quality and Engineering organizations.When the manufacturing line is properly defined to get a continuous product flow (lineal, clear and constant) and with more than one FPY measurement point or FPY Quality Gate established, the Firstpass Yield (FPY) will be named as Throughput Yield or Total Pass Yield (TPY), considering the following example for TPY calculation:

You have a product line that is divided into four sub-processes(four FPY measurement points or FPY Quality gates): A, B, C and D. Assume that you have 100 units entering process A. To calculate TPY you would calculate the yield by dividing the number of units passedright the first time all the defined inspections and routine tests for related sub-process by the total number of inspected and tested units for related sub-process.
