What is FOMILENIO?
The Millennium Fund of El Salvador (FOMILENIO) is a Programme that pretends to promote sustainable development in the Northern Zone, which seeks to help reduce poverty througheconomic growth. Will be implemented over five years, from October 2007 to September 2012, but will have a greater impact in a long term. It has been donated $ 461 million dollars by the MillenniumChallenge Corporation of America, their actions are aimed at:
* Increase the capacity of the Northern Zone residents in education, skills, and opportunities for employment and business improvingbasic social infrastructure of the communities and surroundings (Human Development Project)
* Increase the production of goods and services and employment opportunities (Productive DevelopmentProject)
* Reduce the cost and length of transportation; people and goods within this region (Road Connectivity Project).
It is a program that seeks a close involvement of the private sector,nongovernmental organizations, local governments, and people of the Northern Zone that help and promote a sense of ownership in a society that at the same time allows its people to be creators of theirown development.
MAJOR THEMES:
To ensure the success of their projects, FOMILENIO incorporates in its management, five cross-cutting themes that reflect their commitment to sustainable developmentin the Northern Zone.
1. Environment: promoting the rational use and care of natural resources and to implement the recommendations on construction zones to reduce the impact of pollution anddeforestation.
2. Territorial zoning: exploiting the productivity and potentiality of each site of the Northern zone.
3. Gender Equality: provide equal opportunities for men and women in thearea.
4. Citizenship: facilitate the participation of communities and local governments before, during and after the implementation of the project.
