En 1805 se trasladó a la universidad de Cambridge. Aquí, además de ser un brillante estudiante, destacaría por sus trajes extravagantes y su vida licenciosa y despilfarradora. Pese a ello, seganó el sobrenombre de buen chico y tuvo grandes amigos, como Lord Broghton, John Hobhouse, quien sería líder del Partido liberal. Fue muy aficionado a escribir versos ya en esta época, y aprendió boxeo y esgrima, siendo un gran experto en ambas artes de lucha, gracias a sus amigos Jackson y Angelo. Dejaría la universidad por falta de dinero y se mudaría a la calle Picadilly 16 de Londres, endonde fue amante de una prostituta. Luego, ya sin dinero, volvería con su madre a Southwell y se dedicaría en cuerpo y alma a la poesía. Ese año publicó su primer libro de poesías, intitulado Composiciones fugaces, gracias a una amiga suya, Elisabeth Pigot, la cual le pasó en limpio sus escritos y los editó.
