Contrasting points of view
Hobbes & Locke

Thomas Hobbes and John Locke were two leading English philosophers from the same time who influenced very much in politics thoughts from the 1600´sto now. Besides they were from the same time, their points of view about the government and the natural condition of humans were very different.

Hobbes idea about the natural condition of humanbeings was the one of continuous conflict and competition. At the other side, Locke’s idea about the natural condition of human being was a state of equality, their ideas were totally backwards. Hobbessaid “no account time, no arts, no letters, no society (…) continual fear and danger of violent death, and the life of people, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short” but Locke instead said, “stateof perfect freedom to order their actions, and dispose of their possessions and persons as they think fit without depending” so that can t be competition as Hobbes said

Also, Locke wanted aperfect freedom state, “a state of perfect freedom to order their actions, and dispose of their possessions and persons without asking or depending upon any other man”, Locke wanted freedom! But Hobbes ideawas towards; his idea was anarchy, only the strongest one survives.

Hobbes natural state was anarchy, Locke´s was democracy, Hobbes social contract was absolute power, Locke´s said people giveonly some of their rights to the leader for him to make good decisions, if he didn’t, he could be removed. Hobbes believed that people were self interested, and Locke believed in the individual rights.We see that these two important political philosophers’ thought totally differs. But the most convincing point of view for me is Locke’s one because he was concerned in prosperity, equality, freedomand they all makes you happy and we all want to be happy.
