DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS OF RHETORIC USED BY THE WRITERS

ACTIVIDAD GRUPAL: Traducir todas las oraciones al español

Rethorical functions to describe:

1) An octopus appears to be just a huge head with eightlong, fearful arms. Its head is soft and rubberlike. Its eyes stick out on stalks so that it can see in all directions. Its mouth is on the underside of its body and has powerful jaws shaped like a beak. The long arms, or tentacles, have double rows of suckers. These can fasten onto objects with such suction that they cannot be pulled off.

2) The liver is the largest organ in the body. Itweighs a little more than three pounds in an adult. It is wedge-shaped and is situated under the diaphragm, mostly on the left side of the body, where it is protected by the lower ribs.

3) The Leclanché cell consists of a leakproof jacket containing a porous pot in which there is a paste of manganese dioxide and carbon granules surrounding a carbon rod.

Rethorical functions for definitions:1) Lava is the name applied to the liquid rock material, or magma, when it reaches the surface, as well as to the solid rock formed by consolidation due to cooling. The temperature of lava as it comes to the surface may exceed 2000°F. (This earth of ours by Victor T Allen, p. 3)

2) The sediment deposited by a stream is called alluvium. (This earth of ours by Victor T Allen, p. 97.)

3) Adisease is normally defined as an abnormal condition of the body that has a specific cause and characteristic outward 'signs' and symptoms. Technically speaking, a 'sign' is considered to be an indication of a disease that is noticed by the doctor but not by the patient, while a symptom is something felt or perceived by the patient himself - but this distinction is often blurred in ordinaryconversation.

Rethorical functions for division:

1) Lavas may be divided into two contrasting types, acid and basic. Acid or siliceous lavas have a high silica content, about 70 to 75 per cent, and are stiff or viscous. Basic lavas have a silica content of about 50 per cent. Dark colored and fluid, they flow more easily at lower temperatures. (Source: This earth of ours, p. 3 .)

2)Eruptions of volcanoes may be divided into three main types: (1) the explosive type, in which rock fragments are thrown out with explosive violence; (2) the quiet type, in which hot liquid rock quietly flows on the surface; (3) the intermediate type, in which eruptions are at times violent and at other times consist of the quiet outflowing of lava. (Source: This earth of ours. p. 5-6)
Rethoricalfunctions for Classifying / categorizing
1) Radio formats are frequently employed as a marketing tool, and are subject to often change. Music radio, old time radio, all-news radio, sports radio, talk radio and weather radio describe the operation of different genres of radio format and each format can often be sub-divided into many specialty formats. (1)

2) Online media can be classifiedaccording to: the objective or aim pursued (Alonso and Martínez, 2003); the public to which they are directed; the application of the professional, structural, editorial and ethical criteria of journalistic activity; the use made of the possibilities offered by cyberspace (López, Gago and Pereira, 2002); and even by the constant renovation or updating of contents.
