Moctezuma’s Headdress

Kopilli Ketzalli is the Aztec name for “precious crown”. Moctezuma’s headdress is a type of crown used by the ninth emperor of the Aztecs. It consist of 400 hundred Quetzalbird feathers with gold and beautiful stones. Right now it’s located in the museum of Ethnology of Vienna in Austria.

This object wasn’t really a necessity of the society because not everyone canuse it. This headdress meant power and a social status in the civilization. Only important people with a lot of power could use it and an emperor of the Aztec civilization used this exact headdress. Wecan relate this object like crowns, only the kings, queen or princesses use crowns and they show their power and majesty.
To make this big and majestic piece of art they were special people known fortheir knowledge in feathers and precious stones. The feathers used in this “penacho” were of Quetzal bird, a bird sacred for his wisdom, fertility, freedom and peace.

This object was inTenochtitlan, the capital of the Aztecs and when the Spanish arrived, Hernan Cortes took it from Moctezuma and he took over the Aztec empire making himself the one who gives others in there. Cortes gave theheaddress to the Spanish king who sponsored his trip and the king gave no interest to the feathers, so an unknown person from the Spanish court kept it. After 50 years, this object passed to the Ambrasfamily after an auction in Venice. Then in the 1600’s, the headdress reappeared in Brussels, where a noble of Tirol acquire it for his Mexican art collection and after his dead, the object travelledfrom country to country to protect it from World War II. At the end, it ended in Vienna in 1817.

In conclusion, this object its very precious and known in the whole world. It showed the power ofMoctezuma and its very representative of our Mexican culture.
