Therefore, TNC is supporting strivings by offering resources, technical support and consolidating alliances on this field, working with the government, local NGOs, community groups and landowners in every country of the region.
Primary Characteristics
Thereis nothing new with protecting the natural resources in private lands in the region, actually since 1954 there is creation of private reserve registries. This type of effort has increased importantly and currently there is data that shows that there are 2,900 private and social properties approximately that are being preserve in Central America by different government programs, NGOs andlandowners, they cover an area of more than 509,000 hectares.
On the other hand, there are several "reserves" that have not looked or received any public or NGOs recognition yet; hence, they are not being assessed.
These protected land share the following characteristics:
* These lands are property of private, community or indigenous groups.
* Voluntarily its owners decided to protect andhandle complete or partially the land, according to an integration of environmental parameters.
* To be able to show a commitment of conservation, the owners created an agreement with a public entity or a NGO.
How do we work?
TNC works in alliance with our partners. In the past years we have been learning, sharing, developing political tools and most important protecting additional landsunder innovated instruments and incentives. Currently in all the countries from the region
we have a working relationship with governments and NGOs . We have been working with the Private Nature Reserves Networks from each country to have a variety of partners and allies to work with important NGOs that work in the conservation of private lands some examples of them are Defensores de la Naturalezaor Fundaeco in Guatemala Programme for Belize or TIDE in Belize, CEDARENA in Costa Rica or ANCON in Panama among others. Through agreements and actions supported by TNC, our partners and the programs in the countries with TNC have achieved various results such as:
* Support to the Private Reserve Network in Panama which has consolidated a process of institutional development, workshops topromote the tools of private conservation in different parts of the country
From the possession of land point of view, Middle America is a collage of state lands, community properties, local soil, indigenous territory and factories property or landowners. Consequently, for the sustainable development of the region alliances with all this factors must be explored and take place.
