Responding naturally
In conversations we usually give short initial replies and then explain.
A: How old are you?
B: 21 (instead of“I’m 21 years old”)
A: Where are you from?
B: Chile (instead of “I’m from Chile”)
That way the conversations are quick and you don’t have to say everything informal writing method.
Jobs
We can use some questions to ask about different jobs. We often add so to the start of question or then to the end.
Examples: So are youworking in the supermarket? ; Are you enjoying you work then?
Negative comments
We often add a short expression before stating things that are negative in someway. We usually do that for the listener don’t take the comments personal against him.
Common questions about illness
We use these questions to know if a person isfeeling fine or is ill or has a problem.
Examples: Are you okay? Are you feeling alright? Do you have a cold? etc…
Giving directions
We often repeat similarphrases when we give directions.
Examples: cross over, go along, go past, turn left at, turn right at, go through, across, get on/off
Responding to news and commentsWe can comment on news we hadn’t heard about by saying:
Really? That’s good news / nice / great / terrific / etc.
We can agree with a comment or opinion bysaying:
I know. It’s good news / really good / awesome / boring/ etc.
We can agree to a suggestion by saying:
Good idea. Absolutely / Definitely
Giving bad news
Weoften say I’m afraid to apologise for having bad news and to reply questions we use I’m afraid so, I’m afraid not.
Examples: I’m afraid we have homework for tomorrow.
