In Ear Monitor Assembly

Dear Fellow Musician,
You made a wise choice. The decision to go “in-ears” is a very smart one. Just ask Pete Townshend of The Who. Well you could if he could hear. Pete lost the majority of his hearing as a result of never utilizing in ear monitors. Besides protecting your hearing you’ll find that your playing and/or singing will improve dramatically and you’ll never have to worry about nothearing yourself again. I have tried to make the instructions that follow as user-friendly as possible. It really isn’t that complicated of a setup. Also, for your convenience I’ve listed actual parts and their corresponding part #’s so you can purchase them easily if you don’t have them already. If you have any questions please feel free to email me and I’ll try to answer them as best I can. Heregoes…
Equipment Needed:

1.) Behringer Eurorack Mixer Model UB802 ($49.99 at Musiciansfriend.com)
-Of course you can use another mixer of your choosing, however I think this one is the best value and is perfect for this application. If you do use another make sure it has a quality headphone output.

2.) Adapters
-This is where you need CANNOT skimp on quality. I recommend Hosa Brandadapters. You can get generic ones at Radio Shack, but the quality is far inferior. Don’t be tempted. Buy the Hosa Brand at any major music or pro audio store or order them offline. They’re only a buck or two more and will never let you down.
A. GPP-105 COUPLER ¼" PHONE (FEMALE) — ¼" PHONE (FEMALE) (MONO / STEREO) ($3)

B. GPM-179 STEREO 3.5mm (FEMALE) — MONO  ¼" PHONE(MALE) ($3)
[pic]Make sure you get this exact one!!! If you get one that is a mono female, you won’t have sound in both ears, and if you accidentally use a stereo male end, it won’t work at all. Use the model number I’ve listed at the beginning and make sure it is exact.

3.) Line Level Mono Cable ($5-10)
-This is the genius part about this setup and is a main reason why many chooseto use it over the Shure stuff. You can use any old guitar cord. You don’t need expensive, fancy, balanced cables with XLR. If the cord ever fails, just grab another guitar cord that you have on hand. Any mono instrument cord will work.
4.) Mini Project Box from Radio Shack Catalog #: 270-1801 ($2.99)

5.) Universal Belt Clip from Radio Shack Catalog #: 43-168 ($3.79)

6.)Headphones ($10-Hundreds of Dollars)
-These are obvious, but I wanted to mention a bit about them. This is where you’ll have to use what fits your budget and works best for you. Sony makes very cheap headphones that fit into your ears for around ten bucks. They work but don’t give you the total sound occlusion you want. The best by far are the E1 and E5 ear phones by Shure, but are pricey at $125 and$300 respectively. I personally think the E1s are worth it. They really block out the sound. You just need to try several different types. Just look for ones that go inside the ear canal. There are many under 20 bucks. The ones that block out most external sound are the best. You’ll have to see what you like best and can afford. Eventually, I recommend using the E1’s with custom ear molds availablefrom Sensaphonics. They will run you about 150 bucks for the custom fitting and molds, but are worth it if you can afford it. Since you’re saving hundreds of dollars using this great setup, why not spend the money on quality ear pieces?

ASSEMBLY:
You won’t believe how easy this is. In fact it’s less of an assembly and more of a simple“what goes where”.
1.) Belt Pack
A.) Insert the mono plugin item 2B above into the coupler in item 2A above. They will of course snap together, but secure them with regular electric tape to keep them from coming apart or moving.
B.) Before screwing the back on the project box, cut holes with a drill or a knife in the ends wide enough for the adapter apparatus you made in step A to fit into. If you purchased the correct size project box the adapters...
