2. Our founding fathers
It is quite interesting to trace the humble beginnings of the country that is now known as the United States. The country´s roots can be traced as far back as the middleAges (500-1350) when the Vikings were the first Europeans to reach the North American Continent. Then on august 3, 1492, Christopher Columbus set sail with a crew of 90 sailors aboard 3 tiny maritimevessels known as the Niña, the Pinta and the Santa Maria. Picture yourself in the shoes of a young, inexperienced sailor. Imagine the tension he must have felt as the ship he was on sailed away into thehorizon. As you know, the outcome of the voyage was that Columbus didn´t reach Asia, but instead arrived in a land that would later come to be known as the American Continent.
Let´s make a Colony:Jamestown.
Soon after, Spain sent many voyages and the first European nation build an empire in the Americas. The firs colony in the new world was set up by the Spanish at St. Augustine (nowFlorida). The first permanent English colony was established at Jamestown in 1607 when the Virginia Company of London received a charter from King James I authorizing colonization in what is now called thestate of Virginia.
What made this colonizers travel across the merciless and unforgiving Atlantic Ocean? The answer was probably greed.
Seeing the prosperous results that the Spaniardsaccumulated in Central America, the English were aiming for the same results.
They ere so obsessed with the idea of finding gold that they neglected their basic need: SURVIVING!!
They spent their dayshunting for gold and never really worried about planting crops and having a food supply ready for winter.

When the cruel winter arrived, most of them died from disease and starvation.They forced to live on dogs, cats, snakes, toadstools, horsehides, rats and anything they could find. Of the 900 people who originally arrived in 1606, only 60 were left after 4 years of arduous...
