Accommodation: is a dwelling or place of temporary residence. Example: There's no problem in staying a couple of extra days since the accommodation is extremely cheap.
Adjoining room: two guest rooms located next to each other which are connected by a door between them. Example: We would like to reserve for two adjoining rooms as we want to constantly be in touch.
A.D.R.:average daily rate. Hotel revenue divided by the number of rooms sold. Hotels use this measure to calculate the average price at which they are booking hotels each night. Example: The A.D.R. of our hotel increased 2.9 since the last time that I came.
Advance deposit: Money paid, usually by check or credit card, by a guest before arriving at the hotel. Example: Sir, I’ll have to ask you for anadvance deposit on this reservation.
Allotment: a share set aside for a specific purpose. In the tourism industry are used to designate a certain block of pre-negotiated carrier seats or hotel rooms which have been bought out and held by a travel organizer with a huge buying power like a wholesaler, tour operator or hotel consolidator, and more rarely by a retail travel agent. Example:Allotments not only provide fresh fruit, vegetables, and flowers at a very reasonable cost, but additional benefits to be gained including companionship.
Amenities: An "extra" service or product given to guests by the hotel, typically at no extra charge. Example: I’m sorry, can you tell me which amenities are included in my package?
American breakfast: A full breakfast is a traditional cookedmeal, typically and originally eaten at breakfast, though now often served at other times during the day. It includes fruit juice, ham, eggs, bacon or sausage, all kinds of bread, brewed beverage, jam, marmalade etc. Example: Madam, this hotel only serves American breakfast on week days.
American plan: A guest room rate that includes three meals a day (breakfast, lunch and dinner). Example: Canyou please tell me the price for a single room with American plan?
A.R.G.: Alternate reality games. Example: A. R. G. are each day starting to have more participation in the hospitality industry, as some hotels have included these type of games as entertainment for children.
Arrival time: The time at which a public conveyance is scheduled to arrive at a given destination. Example: Thearrival time of this flight has been changed, as the flight is delayed.
Baby-sitter: a person engaged to care for children when the parents are not home. Example: I told you to call reception to send us a baby-sitter! Now we won’t be able to go on hiking.
Back of the house: It is a service area not exposed to public such as Kitchen, Engineering, Purchasing, Personnel etc. Example: The back ofthe house is a disaster. We need urgent cleaning.
Back office: The internal operations of an organization that are not accessible or visible to the general public. Example: Human resources and account departments are part of the back office of our hotel.
Back to back: One right after another. Term used for tours and group bookings when one group leaves and another group takes its place onthe same day. Therefore rooms are continually booked throughout a certain period. Example: People, today we will have a lot of movement in our hotel as there are a lot of back to back groups booked.
Bellboy/bellman: a man or boy employed in a hotel, club, etc., to carry luggage and answer calls for service; page; porter. Example: You don’t have to carry luggage, that’s the bellboy’s duty.Bellhop: A person employed by a hotel to assist guests, as by carrying luggage and doing errands. Example: Sir, please don’t worry, the bellhop is right here to help you with your luggage.
Block: is a pre-assignment of specific room numbers to reservations either on or before the arrival day. The Front Office Clerk will thus be aware of the room commitment and has to stick to it. Example:...
